Are You a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP)?

Are you a Highly Sensitive Person?

You might be if...

  • You are easily overwhelmed by strong sensory input (bright lights, loud noises, strong smells)
  • You need more alone time to withdraw for relief and recuperate/recharge
  • You notice details and changes to those details
  • You are often affected by other people’s moods, emotions
  • You can feel and are affected by the “vibe” or “energy” of a place
  • You’re deeply moved by creativity, the arts, music
  • You startle easily
  • You can feel when someone is looking at you or you get nervous being watched

If you can identify with the majority of the above, then you just might be a Highly Sensitive Person

For over half of my life I thought something was wrong with me.

  • In a restaurant, I needed to sit with my back near a wall; no center tables and no backs to the rest of the place
  • At movie theaters, I’d need an end cap seat, no way I’m sitting in the middle with people also in front of me and behind me
  • Sounds were often too loud, smells too strong, and anything against my skin felt rough
  • And after being around a lot of people, I’d come home drained
  • If I was with people I loved, I’d come home feeling loved…and drained

People would call me “picky,” “particular,” “high maintenance,” and when you’re referred to that often enough, you start to believe it.

When I first learned of Highly Sensitive People, I felt a great relief!

A newfound freedom washed over me.

I realized that I wasn't defective or weak or even "too" sensitive.

It was just that, compared to most other people, my constitution was naturally extra porous to other energies. So, knowing about flower essences, that's when I formulated a blend to help shield my energy field. This is our 🪬Protection blend!

Highly Sensitive People are those who think, feel and love deeply

And we Highly Sensitive People make up approximately 20-35% of the population

Our finely tuned nervous systems mean we can be more easily overwhelmed by stimuli like light, sound, taste, and touch.

And so of course, we also very much notice and appreciate the energy of calmness, or to use a more clinical term: regulation.

It turns out that, in reaching for regulation (nervous system regulation/calming) we often reach for cats!

😊

(And of course, we also reach for 😌Calm, our best-selling flower essence blend.)

It really does make so much sense that we’ve found many cat lovers to be HSPs!

With cats...

  • We get to safely love them
  • Their purrs are regulating for the nervous system
  • Their soft fur is also calming for us
  • Even watching them clean themselves is calming

Something else we found is this:

The Highly Sensitive Person / cat lover who loves deeply often needs a little help loving themselves

I discovered this about myself, with Cumin.

Cumin was my soul cat.

We were so bonded. When she passed after 16 years, it felt like she took all the love in my life with her. Without knowing it, I had been sustained by the great love that I felt, in loving her so much. Without knowing it, I had neglected working on my own self-love and self care.

But I wasn’t alone.

Highly Sensitive People experience love and care at a very deep level, and we often experience a bag of mixed energy - some energy is from others, some is our own - but whose energy is whose?

And despite all of us needing to work on our self-love (it was during this period of my life that I created what is now our 🌹Self-Love blend), Highly Sensitive People need a bit more careful and conscientious nervous system care.

Now, OK, hold on...

Are you thinking what I'm thinking....?

It can be hard as it is, just to do the basic stuff like diet, exercise, and sleep. You're telling me HSPs require more???

Yes...just a bit more care, space, and softness.

Highly Sensitive People need more quiet, nature, and alone time

All of these things help to regulate our nervous systems.

And they also help our beloved cats!

Cats are affected by our energy and when we take care of our energy, we’re taking care of them. So if it’s hard to do it for yourself, do it for your cat!

Okay, but don’t be bummed by the extras we have to do.

Being a Highly Sensitive Person also comes with great gifts!

Here are just few:

  • greater creativity and imagination
  • create more meaningful connections
  • greater appreciation for beauty
  • deeper connection with animals and people
  • and boy, we can read a room!

I have most of these points. Loud noises, strong fragrances affect me. Crowds affect me. When people are high energy or talking fast my brain slows down. I blamed it on Fibromyalgia. I also notice I’m in touch with my cats and “sense” when things are wrong before symptoms appear. My vet thinks I’m amazing. My cats will sense when I need something. They lay across my stomach when I’m having issues, or my chest when I need love. They purr and those purrs are so healing. I can feel the stress leaving me. Thank you for clarifying what I experience. Love you!
